The Reading Launch
Thank you to all the parents who attended our Reading Launch this week. In school this year we are having a special focus on reading and especially on improving children’s comprehension skills (children’s understanding when they are reading). This week, your child will bring home a reading bookmark sheet with ideas of the types of question you can use to help your child with this and attached are some other ideas for ways you can support your child.
Reading lots of books is essential for good reading- books which challenge and books which allow children to practise their skills, so it is important that your child always has a book they are reading for pleasure as well as their school reading scheme book. They should be reading every night. All children have an ‘ERIC’ book which they can change during weekly class library sessions or at after school library club, on Fridays.
We would like to start a ‘Book Swap’. If your child has enjoyed a book and finished with it, we ask the children to donate it to the ‘book swap’. In return, they can select a different book to read. We have a few books which staff have donated, but please encourage your children to take part in this. The book swap will be located in Key Stage 2 from next Monday.
We would also like to start an adult book swap for any adults in our school community to take part in. This will be located in the front office . Please do take part and be a role model to your child by showing them you like to read too.
We are challenging the children to read a million words ( or more) this school year. For those pupils who do ( teachers will base this on book read) there will be a special ‘red carpet’ celebration to reward the children’s efforts. This will be the Millionaire’s Bash.
We would like every child in our school to be a member and regular user of the local library service. Unfortunately, as you will be aware, Central Library remains closed, so we are unable to take the children there at the moment. Opening times for other libraries are on the school website. Please do join, if you aren’t already members. Spare forms and opening times can be found in the school office.
During the year, we plan for the children to work with real life authors to really inspire their reading and writing. The first of these will take place on Thursday when Year 6 will be working with an author at St Cuthbert’s High School.
The Book Bus visits school next Tuesday and will be on the playground before and after school as well as during the school day .On board, children can buy reasonably priced books . If enough are bought more books will also be given to school, so please support your child’s reading and the school . A leaflet with some examples of books and prices will be sent home with the children.
If you wish to help out in school with reading or anything else, please contact me. We’d love to have you.
